Provost’s chain of office, Tranent (detail)

This chain of workplace was created in 1953 by Hamilton and Inches of Edinburgh and was utilized by successive provosts of Tranent till the abolition of all burgh councils in 1975. The responsibilities of the town council were then absorbed by East Lothian District Council.
This is a sliver chain of flat links formed with a Celtic-knot motif. An oval pendant decorated in coloured enamels is suspended from the chain. The pendant displays a shield with the figures of an agricultural worker and a miner.
Tranent became a ‘Police Burgh’ in 1860 and a ‘Small Burgh’ in 1929: each titles granted elected commissioners and later councillors possession of authority and responsibility for specific regional matters such as policing, housing, sanitation, and other folks.
